The Reformation
About us
What we Believe
The Church is reformed (holds to the teachings rediscovered in the 16th century Reformation by Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin and others) and evangelical (maintains that the Bible is God’s Word – without error, central to Christianity and relevant to people of every age) in doctrine and only baptises those old enough to really understand the commitment that God requires of Christians. In brief, our beliefs are as follows:
- God is real and has a special interest in people.
- Nothing in creation ‘just happened;’ God made it all.
- Although God is one, He consists of three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- The Bible is God’s Word to the world, is without error in its original language and is the perfect guidebook for living.
- In living life by our own standards and with little regard for God who is holy, we have alienated ourselves from our Maker and are therefore all subject to being judged and punished by Him.
- Our situation is so dire that we cannot do anything of ourselves to reverse it.
- Jesus Christ’s coming to earth was God revealing Himself through His Son and taking the initiative to save us.
- Christ’s death on the Cross was in God’s plan; through it, He punished the sins of everyone who would ever believe in Him and thus, made forgiveness for them possible.
- Without Christ it is impossible to have a living relationship with God.
- Faith in Christ and obedience to His teaching (which is found in the Bible) is the key to entering and remaining in this relationship with God.
- Through His Holy Spirit, God lives in all those who have come to faith in His Son and ensures that they stay the course, even in the face of difficulty and opposition.
- Baptism represents dying to our old way of life and living a new life in Christ.
- The Biblically prescribed method of baptising is by immersion in water and is the privilege of those who have made a public statement of their conversion to Christ.
- Heaven and hell are real places. Death is a beginning, not the end.
- Jesus is coming again in a majestic display of His power to bring to an end the world and life as we know it, judge the response each of us has made to Him during our lives, condemn evil and those that have rejected Him – forever, and bring in a renewed, everlasting, heaven and earth for those who have believed and trusted in Him.
